Hair Extension Caring Guide
Follow our caring instructions to ensure that your extensions always look and feel their best.
Properly caring for your extensions can help ensure they last longer and remain as luxuriously luscious and beautiful as the day you bought them!
Washing Your Extensions
Excessive washing and styling will damage the cuticle and decrease the lifespan of the hair, We recommend that you wash your hair 1-2 times per week and use dry shampoo in between washes.
Always brush your hair properly before washing.
Start by separating the rows and brushing from the tips of your strands, successively working your way up the length and towards the root.
By following this simple step, you'll ensure that your locks are tangle free and ready to be washed thoroughly.
Use professional haircare products that are hydrating and high in moisture, hair extensions do not have access the vital moisturising oils that are produced from your scalp and need extra moisture and conditioning to stay soft and healthy.
DO NOT USE ANY PRODUCT that contains the corrosive chemical ingredient bis-3-aminopropylamine on these weft extensions as it could damage the band at the top of the weft which will result in the weft shedding prematurely.Â
To keep your hair extensions looking their best and nourished, use a shampoo formulated without parabens or sulphates. This can help ensure that you don't strip the vital moisture from them with unnecessary cleansing.
HOWEVER,
We do recommend that you wash your hair with a gentle sulfate deep cleansing shampoo every two weeks to remove product build and mineral buildup.
Always apply conditioner from mid-lengths to ends, never apply conditioner on your scalp as this could cause extensions to slip.
Styling Your Extensions
Extensions should NEVER be left weft and should always be dried to 100% after washing, swimming and sweating.
DO NOT LEAVE THE BASE OF YOUR WEFT OR TAPE WETÂ the glue at the band will swell and expand causing the glue to lift and this will cause shedding.
Using excessive heat on hair extensions will reduce the lifespan and damage your hair.
Never use direct heat on any type of extension bond.
We recommend that you don't set your styling tool higher than 365°F.
100% YES, you should always protect your extensions and your own hair from possible heat damage caused by styling tools.
Applying oil or serum to hair extensions is crucial for maintaining their health, appearance, and longevity.
Since extensions don't receive natural oils from the scalp, adding a lightweight oil or serum helps replenish moisture, preventing dryness and brittleness.
It also smooths the hair cuticle, reduces frizz, enhances shine, and makes the extensions easier to manage by reducing tangles.
Excessive heat from styling tools like flat irons, curling wands, and blow dryers can cause the pigments in the hair extensions to break down, leading to color fading.
Heat can accelerate the oxidation process, especially if the hair is exposed to air and heat simultaneously.
Oxidation can alter the color of hair extensions, particularly if they have been chemically treated or dyed.
Brushing Extensions
Your hair extensions are attached to your own hair and incorrect brushing can result in damaging your own hair.
Always brush your extensions with a bristle brush and hold the top of your weft track while brushing from the bottom to the top.
Make sure that you DON'T brush over your weft track.
You should avoid brushing wet extensions because they are more vulnerable to damage when wet, making them prone to stretching, breaking, and causing the bonds or wefts to weaken or slip.
Instead, gently detangle the extensions with a wide-tooth comb or brush specifically designed for extensions, starting from the ends and working your way up once they are dry or slightly damp.
You should brush your extensions regularly to avoid matting and tangling.
The longer your hair the easier it is going to tangle.
Brush your extensions first thing in the morning, during the day and before bedtime.
Sleeping With Extensions
Brush your extensions and apply a hair oil or serum before sleeping.
Braid your hair or tie it in a loose ponytail/bun before sleeping to prevent tangling.
Sleeping on a silk or satin pillowcase is recommended when wearing extensions because these materials reduce friction, which helps prevent tangling, frizz, and breakage.
Unlike cotton, which can create friction and absorb moisture, silk and satin allow your extensions to glide smoothly as you sleep, maintaining their smoothness and prolonging their lifespan.
General Extension Care
You should do maintenance on your hair extensions every 4 to 8 weeks.
Regular maintenance is crucial because it ensures that the extensions remain securely attached, prevents tangling, and keeps the hair looking natural and healthy.
During maintenance, the extensions can be adjusted as your natural hair grows, and any issues like slippage or matting can be addressed, prolonging the lifespan of both your natural hair and the extensions.
Use caution when swimming - always tie your hair in a high bun before swimming to avoid getting your hair wet – If you are going to get your hair wet first apply a hair mask before swimming to add an extra layer of protection.
Yes Absolutely, Exercise will not cause damage to your extensions. Be sure to dry the base of your extensions in cases of excessive sweating.
Key ingredients in many sunscreens, such as Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane (Avobenzone) and Octocrylene, are protective against UV rays but problematic for hair extensions.
Opt for mineral-based sunscreens that are free from Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane and Octocrylene.
Always wash your hands after applying sunscreen and before touching your hair to avoid transferring residues.
When using sunscreen, consider styling your hair in a high ponytail or a braided bun to minimize contact between your extensions and the sunscreen.
To keep hair extensions looking healthy and free of split ends, regular trims are necessary.
These maintenance trims, although minor, can gradually reduce the length of the extensions over time.
Trouble Shooting Extensions
There are several reasons as to why your extensions could be shedding.
Excessive heat on an extension bond, can melt the glue and disintegrate the extension bond.
Moisture Damage - Leaving extensions wet for extended periods can break down and weaken the bonds.
Chemical Effects and Product Reactions can also cause extension bonds to weaken and disintegrate.
Hard water contains high levels of minerals, particularly calcium magnesium and copper which can significantly impact the color and texture of hair extensions.
When hair extensions are washed with hard water, minerals from the water deposit on the hair strands.
Over time, this buildup can lead to a noticeable change in the hair color.
Salt water can lift the hair cuticle, increasing porosity and making the hair more prone to absorbing unwanted minerals and pollutants that can further change its color.
Chlorine is a strong oxidizing agent and can strip the hair of its natural oils and color. It reacts with the pigments in the hair, causing them to break down and fade.
This can result in dull, lifeless color and even a greenish tint, especially in lighter-colored extensions.
Your extensions may be feeling hard and dry due to a combination of factors such as lack of moisture, excessive use of heat styling tools, and product buildup.
Hair extensions don't receive natural oils from your scalp, so they can easily become dry if not regularly moisturized.
Overusing heat styling tools without proper protection can further strip the hair of its natural moisture, leading to dryness and stiffness.
Additionally, product buildup from using heavy or unsuitable hair products can coat the extensions, making them feel hard and less flexible. To restore softness, focus on deep conditioning treatments, using a lightweight oil or serum, and reducing heat styling.
Your extensions may be matting due to several reasons, including improper care, product buildup, and lack of regular brushing.
When extensions are not detangled regularly, especially after washing or sleeping, they can easily form knots that lead to matting. Product buildup from using heavy or unsuitable products can also cause the hair to clump together, making it more prone to matting.
Additionally, sleeping without securing your hair in a braid or using a silk/satin pillowcase can increase friction, leading to tangles and matting.
Regular brushing, proper washing, and using lightweight, extension-friendly products can help prevent matting.
Yes, it is normal for extensions to develop split ends over time, especially with regular use and styling.
Like natural hair, extensions can experience wear and tear, particularly at the ends, which are more vulnerable to damage from brushing, heat styling, and environmental factors.
However, while some split ends are normal, maintaining the extensions through proper care—such as regular conditioning, using heat protectants, and trimming the ends occasionally—can help minimize the extent of split ends and keep the extensions looking healthy.
